Smart consumers are careful with their money; before handing it over, they ensure the money is going into trusted hands. There are still thousands of businesses out there that seek to swindle unsuspecting consumers out of their money. To protect yourself from being scammed, use trusted organizations online to research businesses you want to use.

Use sites like Canada 411 to gauge consumers’ reactions of the business. Typically, when a business can’t be trusted, unhappy customers will post their thoughts and detail their negative experiences. However, if you find that dozens or even hundreds of consumers have had pleasant experiences with the business, you can move forward knowing that the business has become a trusted establishment within the community.

Visit the Better Business Bureau to determine how the business rates. The BBB gives businesses a letter grade from A+ to F, and on the site you can search for businesses to find out what grade it has received. The ratings are based on a number of factors, including the length of time the business has been operating, the number of complaints filed against the business and the amount of background information the BBB can obtain on the company. While on the site, you can also file a complaint against a company.

Visit Consumer Reports. This site offers product reviews on hundreds of different items, from television and coffeemakers to automobiles. If you’re interested in purchasing an item from a particular company, you can see how this item is rated, as well as how other products from the company fare.

Perhaps the reason that people don’t have good credit is because they don’t understand why credit cards are important. People will tell you that buying stuff is the reason for credit. They will tell you that emergencies are the reason for a credit card. Yes, in a vacuum both of these things matter but that is only in a vacuum. Credit cards serve a far more important purpose than that.

The reason people need to give themselves credit cards is to build credit. Just because someone issues you a credit card doesn’t mean that you have good credit. Many times people think they have good credit but are turned down for a loan on something they need because they don’t have enough established credit.

The reason a credit card is important is it shows those looking at your money situation that you are someone who can make an agreement with a bank and hold your end of the bargain. It shows that when you tell someone you are going to pay them, you do just that. Everything from online personal loans to car loans are done with the prospect of trust.

Of course, emergencies are a part of it, but they should only be a very small part of it. If you are saving for your rainy days then there is really no reason for you to be using a credit card. Learning this is important because knowing the right uses for a credit card will make a big difference in how you establish your credit. Credit is important but not for the reason that you think it is.

Scams can sometimes take you by surprise. As the internet has evolved, so have the scams. They can be scarely similar to what a real business model looks like. While their operation may take you in, the ending is always the same. So, while some scam business models are obvious, others you will have to dig a little deeper to understand the scam.

One of the business models you should avoid is the multi-layer-marketing system, otherwise known as the MLM. The claims are fantastic and the rewards are even more appealing. Entering one of these without doing proper homework will scam you right from the start. This business model almost always depends on you bringing other people in to pay exorbaint fees of which you get the smallest slice of. Now, there are a few legitimate ones. But you need to take a serious look at the product itself and do your homework about demand and competition.

Another business model you should avoid is one that demands cash in return for a “guarantee.” But when you get it and read the fine print, there are no guarantees expect that your bank account is lighter because of it. Most of these kits are completely worthless when it comes to telling you how to do create a business and the promises are pretty much impossible.

Avoiding these types of business models will help you avoid many of the scams and traps for the unguarded, unwary, and likely desperate user. Your biggest protection is always research whatever you plan on getting into. It can save you a lot of hassle and money in the long run.

Identity Theft and Scams Online

If you are an active Internet user, it is important to watch out for the growing number of scams and identity theft tricks that can occur online. Always take extra care when using your online bank account. Make sure you are on the real bank website and not a similar looking scam site. Read the full URL every time to be sure that it is correct.

Do not access important accounts on public computers in schools or libraries. Always log in to your financial websites at home and do not save your password permanently to your computer if other people have access to it.

You also need to be careful for phishing scams where your passwords can get stolen. Never click on strange links in an email from an unknown sender. If one of your friends makes an odd post on your Facebook wall to click on a link and the post seems very out of character, delete the post immediately and contact your friend. It is possible that a hacker is using your friend’s Facebook account t run a password phishing scheme or another scam.

There are many legitimate online businesses these days, but there are also many scammers out there. If you are looking to be a freelance writer, get involved in multi link marketing or to do any other type of online business it is very important to do research before working with an unknown company or client. Do a quick Google search and see what others are saying about the company or individual you are considering working with. This quick and easy practice can save you a big headache.
